The Heathrow Fire

Duct fire The fire caused probably the biggest chaos experienced so far at the international Heathrow airport. The cause: fat coated ventilation ducts from a restaurant.

The fire raged for several hours and paralyzed large parts of the airport. More than 300 flights were canceled or diverted. Over 100 firefighters were involved in the effort that finally managed to stop the fire after it had spread through 200 meters of the ventilation system.

Miraculously staff and visitors managed to get away without injuries. The financial loss for the restaurant, the airport, the passengers and the airlines were soaring.

Did you know that the number of restaurant fires has increased by over 40% since 1998.
